Chapter Three - "A New Age"
Welcome Players! You have made it to Chapter Three: "A New Age." Chapter 3 is different than the previous two in that it requires you to work within a guild to complete a task. This chapter is broken down into two raids: Raid Five: Visual Rhetorical Analysis and Raid Six: Multimodal Transformation and Presentation. Although these are guild raids, it is ultimately up to you how the raids come together in the end. Raid Six will require a Guild Leader whom will be responsible for making sure all guild members meet their deadlines. In the end, the raids will be assessed as a guild with influence from reflections written by each guild member
Raid Five: Visual Rhetorical Analysis
Raid OverviewNow that you have researched your mythology, you have a good idea about the background and history of it. For this raid, each player will contribute to the guild's mythological recreation in Minecraft Education and create a short video guide of the structures. Then, each guild will swap videos and each individual player will write a visual rhetorical analysis of the pieces. The aim of your analysis is to analyze the structures for form, cultural representation, and design aesthetics.
|
Make an argument that persuades readers of your thesis/conclusion about the builds. The form of this assignment is an integrated textual and visual essay that utilizes visual images and the rhetorical elements of composition, presentation, intended audience, and argument. This assignment should be between 750 and 1500 words.
Raid Instruction
1. Plan out your Structures
Now that you have completely researched your mythology, it is now time to take that knowledge and create a three-dimensional image in Minecraft Education in which you and your classmates can explore. To start, think about the following to plan:
2. Build your Structures
Now that you have everything planned, it is time to make it. If the guild has three players, you need to build four structures. If the guild has four people, you need to build five structures. Think about how you want to present it to your classmates because this will change the way you design the structures. You can make them all together, or you can make them separately and use video editing to make it seem like they are together. Make sure you do the outside and at least a little of the interior. Use Minecraft wikis to help you decide on blocks. Building tutorials are also very useful. Make sure you change the spawn location to where you would want your audience to spawn: /setworldspawn. Each world should be uploaded.
3. Create a Short Video
Create a short video of your structures. This is the only piece that your classmates are going to interact with, so make sure you are happy with it. Here are some questions to consider:
4. Analyze the Sanctuary
Once you trade videos with another guild, you will do a visual rhetorical analysis of their structures. First, watch the video several times and take notes. Remember, you are taking notes on the design aesthetics, location, and relation to your knowledge of the culture and mythology being represented. Think about all the design decisions you made for your own sanctuary and apply it to the analysis.
5. Write a Critical Visual Rhetorical Analysis
The aim of your argument is to determine if these structures are a good representation of the culture and mythology through an analysis of design aesthetics in Minecraft: Education Edition and the video, as well as the use of location in the Minecraft world. Make an argument that persuades readers of your thesis. Remember to utilize the visual images and the rhetorical elements of composition, presentation, intended audience, and argument. Think about ethos, pathos, and logos during your analysis. Design aesthetics and important, but also how the video was edited, what music was chosen, and if there is text or voiceover. All of these elements will shape your experience of the structures.
Now that you have completely researched your mythology, it is now time to take that knowledge and create a three-dimensional image in Minecraft Education in which you and your classmates can explore. To start, think about the following to plan:
- Does your mythology reside below ground, above ground, or in the sky? Should the structures be in the hills or in the sea?
- What colors should be used? Are certain colors associated with it?
- What about block texture? Should it be clean and smooth stone or rugged logs?
- Should there be water, lava, or fire?
- Do you want to create the structures in a superflat world or in a specific biome?

- Do you want to show the surrounding area?
- Do you want to have textual narration on slate?
- Do you want it to be one long shot or do you want to edit it?
- What kind of music will you include?
- Will there be any voiceover? Will it be dramatic?

Raid Six: Multimodal Transformation and Presentation
Raid Overview
For your final raid, you will create a text adventure based on your research about your chosen mythology. The text adventure will be made in Twine, culminating in several different outcomes with images and videos used throughout. After the text adventure is completed, the guild will compose several different marketing materials and a multimodal presentation. The presentation will take the form of the popular show Shark Tank--a short presentation followed by a Q&A between Sharks and the Guild. The guild will be assessed on teamwork, creativity, rhetorical justification, completeness, and presentation.
Each guild will appoint a guild leader (typically the bard or ranger) who will be responsible for keeping the guild on task, ensure they meet deadlines, and the overall presentation of the project. There will also be a code specialist (mage) that will be responsible for the coding of the game. The lead writer (warrior) will be responsible for the narrative and writing of the text adventure. Finally, the product specialist (bard or ranger) will be responsible for the marketing materials and video. |
